{"id":10567,"date":"2018-04-29T07:11:39","date_gmt":"2018-04-29T11:11:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vrharbor.com\/?p=10567"},"modified":"2018-12-11T10:41:15","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T15:41:15","slug":"old-penny-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vrharbor.com\/?p=10567","title":{"rendered":"Not a Penny by Half"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"top\" \/>\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">I was out detecting today for a quick hour or two and found what I thought was a George V penny but when I got it home and cleaned some of the muck off it I found it was slightly older than that and not a penny at all. \u00a0I had a bit of fun researching this and found that it is actually\u00a0a halfpenny token issued by the\u00a0British Copper Company. Which had smelting works at Landore, Wales, and rolling mills at Walthamstow, Essex. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently, copper pennies and halfpennies were in short supply after the war with\u00a0Napoleon of France \u2014 and the war against\u00a0America\u00a0in 1812 \u2014 \u00a0and\u00a0earlier coins had largely been melted down for their value as a metal.\u00a0Nothing was done in\u00a0parliament to alleviate the situation but c<g class=\"gr_ gr_56 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"56\" data-gr-id=\"56\">opper<\/g> mines had an abundance of copper so they took it upon themselves to create tokens in penny and halfpenny denominations that could be used in place of the scarce\u00a0\u2018official\u2019 pence. \u00a0This went on for a few years, (1811-1814) and thus this can be considered somewhat unusual find despite its condition.
